I moved from London to Liverpool in 1981 to study Fashion and Textiles. Seven years later, after relocating to Manchester, I began my career in youth work with Stockport Youth Service as a sessional Detached Youth Worker. I quickly fell in love with working with young people and developed my skills, knowledge, and understanding of youth work during my time at Stockport. I was also supported to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Youth Work at Manchester Polytechnic.
After ten years with Stockport and achieving my JNC qualification, I was ready for new challenges. With over 30 years of experience I have delivered, developed and shaped youth work practice across a range of settings, organisations, and projects in both the public and charitable sectors, in London and Manchester. I have managed large government contracts as well as worked in smaller, community-based organisations in ever changing times and political priorities. Throughout my journey, I have had the privilege of meeting many amazing people—both young and old—who have shaped my practice and provided me with invaluable skills, knowledge, and memories.
Creativity has always been a strong driver for me personally, and I have been fortunate to be able to integrate creativity into youth work and organisational development.
Joining Manchester Young Lives as Deputy CEO was an incredible opportunity that came at just the right time. With over 30 years of experience, I was excited to bring together my passion, creativity, skills, and experience into a strategic role supporting the lives of young people. I was keen to return to a grassroots organisation with a rich history—somewhere I could continue to grow and learn but also make a difference. Being Deputy CEO at Manchester Young Lives supports my vision to ensure the voices of children and young people are heard and their needs met.
